Subsidised Organic Veg Boxes on Offer for Newington Residents

Arthur's Organics, the local box scheme provider, inspires Newington residents to go organic and eat healthy with their subsidised veg box scheme in conjunction with Community First funding.

Hull, 24 July 2014 – Arthur’s Organics, the local fruit and vegetable delivery service from Arthur St Trading Co. Ltd has announced that their seasonal, local and organic vegetables are available at less than half price to Newington residents for a limited time.
The boxes, which normally cost £5.50, can be bought for £2.50. They are available for collection every Wednesday at the Lonsdale Centre Craft Fair between 9am-2pm.  Orders must be placed by mid-day the previous Friday by either phoning 07983 383524 or visiting the Arthur’s Organics stand at the Craft Fair.

Arthur’s Organics Director Graham Brooks said: “We are delighted to be involved in this project that has been made possible with the help of the Community First Matched Funding initiative. This initiative is enabling us to introduce Newington residents to cut price boxes and inspire them to try local, seasonal produce and then continue. We have been supplying local and organic vegetables, fruit and groceries to homes since 1999 so it’s great to see our work touching the public in another way.  We’re at a time of change when it comes to organics, so now is the perfect time to get the message out there that it is better, healthier, and we think, much tastier.“

Organics has again been in the news last week. A landmark paper published by the British Journal of Nutrition concluded there are significant differences in the nutritional content of organic and non-organic crops. According to the Soil Association, the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use, the study is the most extensive analysis of the nutrient content in organic vs conventionally-produced foods ever undertaken. Organic produce has up to a whopping 60% more key anti-oxidants than non-organic crops, as well as less pesticides and less toxic heavy metals. It also was found to have less Nitrogen, which is linked in some studies to an increased risk of certain cancers such as stomach cancer.

Dave Coates, Lonsdale Community Centre Manger and Administrator for the Community First Newington panel said “We are pleased to be able to support Arthurs Organics through the Community First Newington fund and this means we are now in a position to be able to target local people in Newington and not only offer them greatly subsided vegetable boxes but also to inform then about the many benefits of organically grown local food. The boxes are available at the Lonsdale community centre’s weekly Craft Fair which is held every Wednesday where a volunteer from Arthurs Organics is on hand to sell the subsidised boxes and provide free samples of the produce for people to try”.
